If you have hundreds of dollars in surplus cartridges, it might be a good idea to repair your printer so you can use the supply you’ve got on hand.

Three to five years.
The good news is that if something happens to your printer, chances are there is something that can be done to fix it. Whether it involves replacing and fixing a certain part or whatever the issue is, most printer repairs are simple.
Toner cartridges have powder that’s bonded to paper to create an image, while ink cartridges have liquid ink that’s sprayed onto paper.
There are two types of ink: pigment-based and dye-based. Dye-based ink offers higher-quality color and results, but pigment-based ink is more stable and long-lasting.
Ink usually has a shelf life of one to two years. If you don’t print often, it’s possible for your ink to expire before it’s used up.
Each toner cartridge typically has a number printed on it somewhere. You can remove the cartridge from the printer to find this number. Alternatively, you can look for the cartridge or type of printer online to find the correct cartridge number.
Approximately every 6–12 months. It depends on how often you use your printer and how much print is on the page.
